Doug Allen purchased an existing tanning salon in Carbondale Illinois in January of 1994 in a college town. He began the new venture with little knowledge of tanning or management of a business. As he operated the tanning salon every day he began to develop systems to refine the day to day operations and increase profits. With continued success, Solartan® expanded to four prosperous corporate locations in different cities within Illinois. Over the years Mr. Allen developed a simple but extremely detailed and effective method of operating tanning salons. As Mr. Allen grew his tanning business he was also involved in additional businesses and expanding his education to an MBA status. After years of dabbling in other industries he finally realized that tanning salons were the most profitable. Therefore, in 2006 Mr. Allen wanted to increase Solartan’s® overall operations with an aggressive expansion plan. After exploring all the methods for growth, the owner operator concept beyond question stuck out in his mind. Consequently, after several years of research and development Mr. Allen designed a very strategic yet straightforward business and marketing plan to duplicate his successful chain of tanning salons through franchising.
